We often get the question: how long do you have to let the hair dye sit before rinsing it out? The answer is, you always have to let the dye sit for at least 35 minutes from the moment you've finished applying all of the dye. After 45 minutes the dye loses it's effect so it's no use letting it sit any longer.

What's the processing time of hair dye?

Of course the user manual explains how to apply the dye and for how long you have to let it sit. But if you've never dyed your hair before, you can start doubting yourself. Maybe you take really long to apply the dye. When you're finally finished dyeing the last strands, the dye in the first strands has already processed for 35 minutes. Then what? Don't worry. The 35 minutes of processing time start when you've finished applying the dye to all of your hair. So when you've dyed the very last strands of hair, you let the dye in all of your hair sit for 35 minutes. Do you have really grey hair or are you using an ash colour? In that case, let the dye sit for 45 minutes.

Processing time of ash hair colours.

Inwerktijd askleuren haarverfWith ash colours (4.1 - ash dark brown, 5.1 - ash brown, 6.1 - ash light brown, 7.1 - ash dark blonde, 8.1 - ash blonde, 9.1 - ash light blonde, 10.01 - very light natural blonde and 11.1 - very light ash blonde), the ash tint only develops in the last stage of the dyeing process. Therefore it's extra important to let it sit for long enough with these colours. That's why it's best to wait 45 minutes before rinsing it out.

Processing time with grey hair

WIth grey hair the dyeing process is a little bit slower, because grey hair is generall much more stubborn and unruly. The pigments in the dye need more time to penetrate through that so they can do their job. So with grey hair it's also best to let the dye sit for 45 minutes from the moment you've finished applying all of the dye so you'll be sure you have enough coverage. You could also pre-pigment it with colourcream or hydrogenperoxide. The hair cuticles will then already recieve a bit of pigment, making it easier to absorb the hair dye.

Letting hair dye sit for too long

Did you forget the time, or did you fall asleep after applying the dye, letting the hair dye sit for longer than 45 minutes? Don't worry! The hair dye has lost it's effect at some point, and won't have any impact after a certain amount of time. It's not possible for odd colours to appear after letting it sit for too long. WECOLOUR also doesn't damage your hair, so you don't have to worry about the health of your hair either. If you let the dye sit for a lot longer than it's supposed to, the only risk is that it might look a little darker than you wanted. Sadly you can't dye dark dyed hair any lighter, that's only possible after six to eight weeks after dyeing. That's why we advise you to opt for a lighter colour if you have any doubts.

Rinsing the hair dye out too soon

It's very unlikely for you to rinse out your hair to soon. But if you did rinse it out too soon, the coverage might not be the best. If you have grey hair, there's a small chance the colour will show up at all. With ash colours there's a big chance the colour will be warmer than you'd hoped. In these cases it's best to dye your hair again with the same colour. It won't do any damage to your hair, because WECOLOUR hair dye doesn't contain any harmful substances.

Hopefully we could help you a little with regards to the processing time of hair dye.

What our clients say

I've never coloured my hair before, so I was a bit scared to do it myself. After reading the instructions properly it all worked out well. My grey hair is completely gone, my hair feels vibrant and the colour is exactly as I expected. The colour is more natural than I could ever imagine.

Annemiek de Jong

Sometimes I had a similar product added to my hair dye at the hairdresser, which I was very satisfied with. Now that I dye my hair at home with WECOLOR due to price concerns, I've started using the Colour Mask. I have just added it to my hair dye. I have to say: I was very impressed with the result. My hair felt very healthy and soft after dyeing. For me, WECOLOUR Colour Mask is here to stay!
